The line went dead again. Everyone had stayed, to see what the excitement was about. I said, “Grandpa Bill wasn’t able to convince his higher-ups that what I told him about the new slaver base was enough to raid it, so we’ll have to take care of it ourselves, if we can find an excuse.”

Nikki said, “How do you figure to do that?”

“The only thing I’m coming up with, is for the scouts to get some names we can run for bounties. If there are enough people there with paper out on them, I think we can justify raiding the place, to sweep them up.”

“Sounds thin, Caveman.”

“If you come up with something better, sing out.”

She said, “That goes for you kids, too. We need an excuse to raid that base. Anyone have an idea?”

She got no answer. I said, “I hate it when my half-baked idea is the best one in the room. See you folks later, I’ve got work to do. Gene, page Jeff to my office in ten minutes. If he doesn’t find me there, he should come to the bridge.”

“On it, Boss.”

I grabbed a transit. Gene must have decided I needed priority. I walked across to the bridge, and Saucy greeted me. I returned his greeting, and asked, “Skipper, have you heard from your brother yet?”

“I have. They found cells, similar to what they had at the old base. No Squatches, but there are some humans in them.”

“That’s enough proof for me, but we need some cover. These guys seem to have friends in high places in the Commonwealth. Did they get close enough to get any IDs on the people on the base?”

“As a matter of fact, Boss, Taz had a long talk with Eve and Aika before he left, and got some new techniques for getting information out of a ship’s computer. He was able to get the manifests of every ship docked at the station, and he forwarded them to us.”

“Have you already asked Mike to check for bounties, too?”

“No, Boss. I didn’t realize that was going to be necessary.”

“Well, Major Rottum called a bit ago, and said he wasn’t going to be able to take care of that base. The only way we can justify going in on our own, is if there are bounties there to collect. If we go in without an excuse, we’ll be in the wrong, as far as the Commonwealth is concerned, since we’ll be attacking ‘peaceful civilians’, who have done nothing to provoke us. I know it’s BS, but we need an excuse to hit that base, and hit it hard.”

“On it, Boss. Mike says he will be able to have us some answers within the hour.”

“Excellent. I’ll be in the office, when you get some answers.”

“When are you planning to launch, Boss?”

“I’m going to look at what your brother sent back, and see what we can come up with for an attack plan. I hope to be ready as soon as you have my excuse.”

“Understood. Do you want to speak to Andre about it?”

“It might be best if I did.
